Northbound US 51 to Westbound WIS 29 Flyover Bridge

Northbound US 51 to Westbound WIS 29 Flyover Bridge

This 747-foot-long bridge on the west edge of Wausau, Wisconsin, facilitates westbound WIS 29 traffic over US 51, Sherman Street, and the CN Railroad. Notably, its central section features a curved steel trapezoidal tub girder, one of the longest of its kind in Wisconsin. The bridge’s design, influenced by right-of-way constraints and the presence of underlying city streets and a nearby river/wetland complex, efficiently uses a tub girder superstructure to navigate multiple underpasses while minimizing substructures. Due to the layout of the curved roadways and necessary spans, a tub girder superstructure was the logical choice. Designed by experienced structural engineers, it blends aesthetically with the Northwoods Wisconsin landscape, enhancing local commerce by providing a smooth, time-saving transit route.
