Covered Bridge Road Reconstruction
Covered Bridge Road Bridge was an existing structure running north-south over Cedar Creek on Covered Bridge Road next to the historic Covered Bridge in the Town of Cedarburg. It was rated structurally deficient with a sufficiency rating of 43.3
and had an NBI rating of 4 for the deck, structural evaluation, and superstructure.
The existing bridge had numerous spalls and areas of delamination on the deck, piers, and sidewalks. Covered Bridge Road is classified as a local road with an ADT of 400. The bridge was in need of a complete replacement. In coordination with the WisDOT local program, GRAEF developed roadway improvement plans for the reconstruction of the Covered Bridge Road Bridge. Improvements included the complete replacement of Structure B-45-013, replacement of the bridge roadway approach, guardrail, pavement marking, and roadway signing.
The new structure was constructed adjacent to the last remaining original-covered bridge in the State of Wisconsin. The covered bridge constructed in 1876 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project involved significant coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office and Wisconsin Historical Society to evaluate alternatives and complete a design that had no adverse effects on the
historic structure.
