Martha Jefferson Hospital
Martha Jefferson Hospital is a nationally-recognized community hospital located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. To help set the standard for clinical quality and personal healthcare, they replaced their existing 100-year old facility with a new 84-acre campus near Thomas Jefferson’s world-renowned estate, Monticello.
The campus plan was to create a hospital in an outdoor park filled with nature, and water. The 525,000 square foot hospital is LEED® Certified. GRAEF provided master planning, site/civil engineering, structural engineering, landscape architecture, traffic planning, environmental engineering and preliminary LEED evaluation.
The four-story steel-framed structure bears on a combination of extensive fill material, native soil and bedrock. A portion of an intermittent stream had to be relocated creating a unique site/civil challenge. Traffic engineers evaluated site access and internal circulation patterns which included 25 intersections, five of them signalized.
