Marcus Performing Arts Exterior Renovations

Marcus Performing Arts Center South Lawn Improvements

GRAEF provided civil engineering and landscape architecture services for the south lawn renovation at this urban performing arts center, transforming the site into an open, accessible, park-like gathering space. The project included the design of perimeter walls and sloped planting areas to accommodate a required security barrier while maintaining an inviting and cohesive landscape aesthetic.

Due to the project’s high public visibility and community interest, the design process incorporated detailed 3D modeling studies to evaluate alternatives and inform key decisions. These studies guided the height and placement of perimeter walls, spacing of the tree canopy, and overall site layout, ensuring the final design balanced security needs with openness and user experience.

Services included preparation of construction documents and construction administration for both civil and landscape components. The design features 24 honey locust trees, native perennial plantings with integrated biofiltration, and expanded green space east of the Peck Pavilion to support public events and outdoor performances.

The project enhances accessibility through stabilized pathways, flexible seating areas, and improved accommodations at the relocated War Memorial plaza. Overall, the renovation supports the Center’s mission to create a welcoming, inclusive outdoor environment that fosters community engagement with the performing arts.
