Hoan Bridge Inspection and Reconstruction
GRAEF conducted an in-depth inspection of the Hoan Bridge over the Milwaukee River. Wisconsin-certified bridge inspectors examined the three-span tied arch and the girder and floor beam system from the Lakefront Interchange to Carferry Drive; completed detailed reports that documented all changing conditions since the 1999 inspection; identified new deficiencies; and offered repair recommendations. Subsequently, GRAEF was selected by WisDOT to provide engineering design services for the I-794/Hoan Bridge complex freeway rehabilitation project. Key project elements included redecking the 2-mile-long Hoan Bridge and rehabilitating its steel girders. Additional work involved placing a concrete overlay on the 29 units of the Lake Interchange, replacing bridges linking I-794 with local streets west of the interchange, and managing construction staging and traffic. Due to the project's size and complexity, construction spanned three years. To meet the aggressive schedule and significant demands, GRAEF partnered with Michael Baker Jr. to handle the entire design contract.
