Casey Key Shoreline Protection

GRAEF was responsible for the data collection, planning, design and permitting, final engineering, construction drawings and technical and environmental specifications for two vertical seawalls to stabilize 3,000 feet of coastal roadway, roadway associated drainage, safety railings and road resurfacing and remediation located on the Gulf of Mexico.

The shorelines at both sites are critically eroded, and a 5-year event is likely to cause failure of the hurricane evacuation route providing access to Casey Key. The wall elevations were designed based on existing topography and road elevations to minimize impacts on adjacent residences. The wall alignment was developed in coordination with regulatory agencies, the County and residents to identify an alignment that balances permit requirements, the sea turtle nesting habitat, community values, and minimizes impacts on local coastal processes.
A sub-surface drainage system was designed for both sites including the effects of wave and tidal conditions that affect the subgrade conditions and stability of the roadway.

At the north site, the existing roadway sub-base has significant voids, which required a remediation and road resurfacing design.
