Urban Ecology Ephemeral Pond

The Urban Ecology Center wanted to create a learning experience for school-age and adult visitors to show the intricacies of a wetland micro-environment. The ephemeral
pond is intended to be a wet pond with a maximum depth of about two feet, tapering down to zero, to provide habitat for frogs and other amphibious species. Suitable plantings on the berm and within the pond provide the desired vegetative habitat. The pond will be wet for only a portion of the year, drying out in the summer and fall, and then refilling naturally in the spring. Paths around the pond and a future boardwalk
provide access for visitors to observe the diverse environment.

GRAEF prepared the plans for the ephemeral pond, using a combination of previously completed surveys and construction plans for the Rotary Centennial Arboretum as the base. Site visits were used to fill in the background and address the area that was formerly occupied by a building. GRAEF prepared an erosion control plan, grading plan, and site utilities plan for the construction of the pond, along with details for the drainage components and concepts for the boardwalk. GRAEF worked closely with the Land Stewards to make sure the design met their goals and guiding principles for the project.
