West National Avenue Reconstruction
To draw attention to the heart of West Allis, the city worked with GRAEF to develop a roadmap to enhance the National Avenue corridor – the main street of West Allis. The roadmap included everything from roadway improvements to streetscaping plans. The complete reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalks is highly visible and creates both a safer user experience and a more attractive appearance. Streetscape improvements include brick paver terraces, safety bump-outs, curbed planter beds, specialty benches, trash receptacles, bike racks, decorative street lighting, and signposts.
The West National Avenue project overcame the challenges of reconstructing a 100-year-old thoroughfare. Unique angles and aging infrastructure were tackled and effective solutions were designed and implemented. The new neighborhood is attractive, safe for pedestrians and cyclists, and serves as a draw for businesses looking to set up shop in a welcoming community.
