Fincantieri Marinette Marine Plant Expansion
Headquartered in Italy, Fincantieri is one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the world. One of the company’s US locations, Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM),
was originally founded to meet America’s growing demand for naval construction in 1942. Now as a modern shipbuilding powerhouse, FMM is undergoing a major campus update and expansion to meet the demands of a new Navy contract to build the latest frigates. GRAEF was retained by Fincantieri Marinette Marine to provide full-service engineering on two building expansions and upgrades.
Due to schedule constraints, GRAEFaccelerāte® was used to expedite the project timeline on both buildings. GRAEFaccelerāte® is a process that uses a set of integrated BIM workflows that allow structural designs to be produced concurrently with construction documents saving time and money, and reducing risk.
There are two major components to the project: the remodel of an existing paint building, expansion of a fabrication building, and a final stand-alone assembly building.
Building 34 | New 175,000-square-foot stand-alone, heavy-crane ship assembly building. In this building, the hull modules are transported from Building 35 and are assembled into a ship that is 90% complete and ready to float. The 110-foot tall building has two 800’ long bays each with (5) 50-ton cranes. There are two 80’ wide x 110’ tall doors at the north end from which the completed ship is removed.
