Blue Grass International Airport (LEX) BHS Expansion
GRAEF provided structural, civil, and mechanical/electrical/plumbing/fire protection/low voltage (MEP/FP/LV) engineering services to support the modification and expansion of an existing facility and its baggage handling system (BHS) at Blue Grass International Airport in Lexington, Kentucky. These upgrades were undertaken to accommodate the installation of a new, more advanced BHS, aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger throughput.
The scope of work extended beyond the BHS itself to include several critical areas of the existing facility. This encompassed the TSA offices and adjacent restrooms near the main security checkpoint, the tug drive located beneath the terminal, and the mechanical room situated west of the tug drive. Each of these areas required tailored engineering solutions to integrate seamlessly with the new system while maintaining functionality and compliance with current standards.
Design and construction documentation adhered strictly to the Transportation Security Administration’s Planning Guidelines and Design Standards (PGDS), ensuring that all modifications met federal requirements for security, safety, and operational performance.
The design phase was successfully completed, with all documentation finalized and ready for implementation. GRAEF’s multidisciplinary approach and attention to detail helped lay the groundwork for a smooth transition to the upgraded baggage handling infrastructure.
