Claude Allouez Bridge and Roundabout
The Claude Allouez Bridge is the only traffic corridor connecting the east side (Broadway) and west side (Main Avenue/Reid Street) central business districts in the City of De Pere. The existing two-lane bridge was structurally deficient and operationally obsolete. Project controversy related to whether a single four-lane bridge alternative or a two two-lane bridge alternative would have the least impact on the business community. As the lead consultant for WisDOT, GRAEF worked with community leaders and project stakeholders to arrive at a plan that resolved many of the community concerns. Because of the project’s controversial nature, an extensive public involvement program was planned and implemented. Specific activities included regular input and presentations to the City Council, focus group informational meetings and business group meetings.
The roadway design portion of this project included approximately 3,400 linear feet of four-lane urban roadway. The project also included design of a two-lane roundabout and two signalized intersections using video detection equipment.
Since its completion, the project has been recognized with six state and national awards for excellence.
